Rug Design Company

When is a Rug not a Rug?

Rug Design Co specialise in the design and creation of luxuriously tactile contemporary rugs, hand-tufted in Scotland in top quality wool and wool/silk mixes. Established in 2004, the company's bespoke design service provides discerning residential clients, architects and interior designers with several paths to creating the perfect rug to compliment and enhance their existing interior space.

Owner and designer Wendy Morrison first trained and worked as a fashion designer. Her creative use of shape, colour and texture has carried over into her rug designs. Designs such as Blossom, Waterlily, Chamomile Lawn and Chrysanth clearly take much of their inspiration from nature but words alone fail to convey their striking 3D qualities.

Wendy's rugs feature many different techniques developed through a deep understanding of the design and crafting process. Yarn colour, yarn type (fine/chunky), yarn quality (loop/cut), pile height, carving, rug size and shape combine to achieve the desired textural effect. In one particular penthouse apartment, a fantastically realistic deep-pile rug called Wild Grass was even ‘mowed’ in a semi-circle to allow the balcony doors to swing open.

The Rug Design Co studio and showroom is based in the seaside town of Dunbar with Wendy visiting clients to create a rug that really works within a space. For 3DinBURGH Wendy has highlighted the flexibility of the craft with the creation of an unusual rug-based product that answers the question: “When is a rug not a rug?”
