
Sally-Ann Provan is a graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and specialises in Millinery, and innovative Costume Design with an emphasis on detail and form.
Specializing in creating pieces for film, theatre, opera, dance, advertising and television, her extensive portfolio of clients ranges from Visit Scotland, to Scottish Opera for their critically acclaimed productions of 'Aida', 'Magic Fountain' and 'Macbeth' to the BBC's Bafta nominated fantasy Gormenghast.
She undertook couturier millinery training in London with the milliner to the Queen Mother, film hatter Jane Smith, and manufacturing milliner Mitzi Lorenz. She has also trained with Angels The Costumiers, working on the recently released Robert De Niro film "The Good Shepherd" and also with The Royal Opera House in London, working on "Faust" and "The Queen of Spades".
Sally has recently expanded into designing and producing exclusive capsule 'ready-to-wear' collections for retail, making her work more accessible to a wider market. Collections can also be commissioned for an individual retailer to complement key season's colours and styles.
At "3dinburgh" she will be exhibiting her first 'ready-to-wear' collection for three years, launched in spring 2007.
It is a capsule collection of 1940s influenced shapes, each trimmed with contrasting velvets and silks, and finished with a vintage buckle or brooch. Each style is available in a wide range of colourways. Previous collections have sold across Europe.
"My work combines historical and period influences with elegant shapes and unusual trimmings to create hats that are well designed, truly feminine and sumptuous to wear."
Elegant forms, balanced with detailing and high quality manufacture are important elements in Sally work.
"I aim to create a sense of alluring beauty combined with a sense of joy in my work. I want to create pieces that women covet and feel gorgeous wearing."
Sally also offers a bespoke millinery service for private clients for any occasion, as demand for her work grows her private client base continues to expand across the U.K. The service is very much tailored to the individual needs of the client and includes fittings and colourmatching. The business caters for costuming or creating headwear for a large scale production, an exclusive collection, or simply for one stunning piece.
She has delivered design, costume, millinery, jewellery and craft projects for The Lighthouse in Glasgow, Six Cities Design Festival, Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen and 8 local authorities across Scotland. She recently exhibited at The Edinburgh International Fashion Festival, 'Hatwalk' '1', '2' and '3', and her solo exhibition 'wreckAge'. Past exhibitions include 'UK Now - The Best of British Design' in Melbourne, and The BBC Clothes Show. She is also a member of Design-Nation and was awarded a Scottish Arts Council Award for Creative Development in 2005.
